Many folk cures which have been around for centuries may be more therapeutic than previously suspected. A case in point is that of penicillin. Alexander Fleming did not just randomly choose cheese molds to study when he discovered this very important bacteria-killing substance. Moldy cheese was frequently given to patients as a remedy for illness at one time. Fleming just isolated what it was about the cheese which cured the patients. In parts of South America, a powder obtained from grinding sugar cane is used for healing infections in wounds and ulcers. This usage may date back to pre-Colombian times. Experiments carried out on several hundred patients indicate that ordinary sugar in high concentrations is lethal to bacteria. Its suction effect eliminates dead cells, and it generates a glasslike layer which protects the wound and ensures healing. Another example of folk medicine which scientists are investigating is that of Arab fishermen who rub their wounds with a venomous catfish to quicken healing. This catfish excretes a gellike slime which scientists have found to contain antibiotics a coagulant that helps close injured blood vessels, anti-inflammatory agents, and a chemical that directs production of a gluelike material that aids healing. It is hoped that by documenting these folk remedies and experimenting to see if results are indeed beneficial, an analysis of the substances can be made, and synthetic substances can be developed for human consumption. ROOM TO LET You might think that sharing a flat with other young people is a good idea. But there is one major problem how to choose the right people? I’ve had at least 25 flatmates, so I should know. It seemed the sensible thing to do when I moved to my old friends and worried about feeling lonely, I moved in with 13 other people so that I would always have someone to talk to. I did - my bed was on the landing. Eventually I was promoted to a room with a door - the airing cupboard. It was just big enough for a single mattress and I had to leave the door open so I could breathe. Then there was the bathroom rota. Accommodating 14 people before breakfast needed a military-style operation. We started taking turns at and the last person to join the household got the first turn. The only advantage was that he or she also got all the hot water. Sadly, the owners threw us out and I had to find a new home fast, which is why I ended up with Gina the circus performer. When I first met her, she was hanging upsidedown above the stairs. She seemed nice though, and the elegant old building was ideal. While we were sipping herbal tea and she was questioning me about my diet and political beliefs, I noticed she had lots of great books I wanted to read. However, things went sour the day I moved in when Gina refused to let me get rid of an army of ants that had moved into my room. She said that killing was against her religion. So was cleaning the bath. As if that wasn’t enough, she left a note on the fridge, where we usually left messages about phone calls and milk, stating her intention to murder me with poison. I moved out in the middle of the night. After that I ended up with some student doctors and was happy enough until we all caught a mysterious illness. It was at this point I broke my self-made rule. After sharing a student house with two friends in Oxford - a period that ended in a fist- fight over fruit juice - I had decided I would never again put a friendship to the phone-bill test. But of course I couldn’t afford a one-bedroom flat in central London so I agreed to get a place with a very neat and tidy friend from school. The house we found had three bedrooms, a washing machine and a nice little garden. We moved in at once. I got the smallest bedroom because I wasn’t going out with anyone, but my new flatmates promised we would swap round within six months. That was 18 months ago. I’m still in the small room and my belongings are still in boxes on the landing, though one of the original girls has been replaced by a banker. What we had advertised for was a female non-smoking professional, but anyone who looked even slightly interesting had always found a better place by the time we decided that they wouldn’t steal our banker got in by promising that being male hadn’t made him incapable of washing dishes and cleaning. He lied, of course. There are, though, advantages to the flat-sharing life. If you can forgive them for drinking the last of your milk, you get captive shoulders to cry on. If you can forget about the ring around the bath, your CD collection instantly gets three times bigger - though you won’t want to listen to most of it. You get three minds to remember to put out the rubbish. Three ways to split the rent. And, unlike a partner, your flatmates won’t care if you wear those old clothes all weekend. In fact, on a good day I wouldn’t be without mine. Unless I could afford a place of my own. Question 37 Why did the writer share a flat when she moved to London? A. ROOM TO LET You might think that sharing a flat with other young people is a good idea. But there is one major problem how to choose the right people? I’ve had at least 25 flatmates, so I should know. It seemed the sensible thing to do when I moved to London. Missing my old friends and worried about feeling lonely, I moved in with 13 other people so that I would always have someone to talk to. Question 40 She moved out because Gina A. threatened to kill was always cleaning the bath. If you can forget about the ring around the bath, your CD collection instantly gets three timesbigger - though you won’t want to listen to most of it. You get three minds to remember to put out the rubbish. Three ways to split the rent. And, unlike a partner, your flatmates won’t care if you wear those old clothes all weekend. In fact, on a good day I wouldn’t be without mine. Unless I could afford a place of my own. Question 31 Why did she move in with her friend? A. This catfish excretes a gellike slime which scientists have found to contain antibiotics acoagulant that helps close injured blood vessels, anti-inflammatory agents, and a chemical that directs production of a gluelike material that aids healing. It is hoped that by documenting these folk remedies and experimenting to see if results are indeed beneficial, an analysis of the substances can be made, and synthetic substances can be developed for human consumption. Question 37 The newest person in the flat had to A. get up very go without breakfast. And how many are left to see? Best known for its spotted coat and long distinctive tail, the snow leopard is one of the world’s most secretive animals These elusive cats can only be found high in the remote, mountainous regions of central Asia For this reason, and because they hunt primarily at night, they are very rarely seen Snow leopards have been officially protected since 1975, but enforcing this law has proven difficult Many continue to be killed for their fur and body parts, which are worth a fortune on the black market In recent years, though, conflict with local herders has also led to a number of snow leopard deaths This is because the big cats kill the herders’ animals, and drag the bodies away to eat high up in the mountains As a result of these pressures, the current snow leopard population is estimated at only 4,000 to 7,000, and some fear that the actual number may already have dropped below 3,500 The only way to reverse this trend and bring these cats back from near extinction, say conservationists, is to make them more valuable alive than dead Because farming is difficult in Central Asia’s cold, dry landscape, traditional cultures depend mostly on livestock mainly sheep and goats to survive in these mountainous regions At night, when snow leopards hunt, herders’ animals are in danger of snow leopard attacks Losing only a few animals can push a family into desperate poverty “The wolf comes and kills, eats, and goes somewhere else,” said one herder, “but snow leopards are always around They have killed one or two animals many time Everybody wanted to finish this leopard.” To address this problem, local religious leaders have called for an end to snow leopard killings, saying that these wild animals have the right to exist peacefully They’ve also tried to convince people that the leopards are quite rare and thus it is important to protect them Financial incentives are also helping to slow snow leopard killings The organization Snow Leopard Conservancy–India has established Himalayan Homestays, a program that sends visitors to the region to herders’ houses For a clean room and bed, meals with the family, and an introduction to their culture, visitors pay about ten dollars a night Having guests once every two weeks through the tourist season provides the herders with enough income to replace the animals lost to snow leopards In addition, Homestays helps herders build protective fences that keep out snow leopards The organization also conducts environmental classes at village schools and trains Homestays members as nature guides, available for hire In exchange, the herders agree not to kill snow leopards In Mongolia, a project called Snow Leopard Enterprises SLE helps herder communities earn extra money in exchange for their promise to protect the endangered cat Women in Mongolian herder communities make a variety of products—yarn for making clothes, decorative floor rugs, and toys—using the wool from their herds SLE buys these items from herding families and sells them abroad Herders must agree to protect the snow leopards and to encourage neighbors to the same The arrangement increases herders’ incomes by 10 to 15 percent and “elevates” the status of the women If no one in the community kills the protected animals over the course of a year, the program members are rewarded with a 20 percent bonus in addition to the money they’ve already made An independent review in 2006 found no snow leopard killings in areas where SLE operates Today the organization continues to add more communities Projects like the Homestays program in India and SLE’s business in Mongolia are doing well, though they cover only a small part of the snow leopard’s homeland, they make the leopards more valuable to more people each year If these programs continue to well, the snow leopard may just have a figting chance Question41 Which of these is NOT true about the Himalayan Homestays program? century England as an aquatic version of rugby Early games used an inflated rubber ball that came from India known as a "pulu" the single Indian word for all "balls" Pronounced "polo" by the English, both the game and the ball became known as "water polo." To attract more spectators to swimming exhibitions, the London Swimming Association designed a set of water polo rules for indoor swimming pools in 1870 At first, players scored by planting the ball on the end of the pool with both hands A favorite trick of the players was to place the five-to-nine inch rubber ball inside their swimming suit and dive under the murky water, they would then appear again as close to the goal as possible The introduction of the rules by Scottish players changed the nature of water polo It became a game that emphasized swimming, speed and passing Scottish rules moved from a rugby variant to a soccer style of play Goals became a cage of 10x feet and a goal could be scored by being thrown Players could only be tackled when they "held" the ball and the ball could no longer be taken under water The small rubber ball was replaced by a leather soccer ball If the player came up too near the goal, he was promptly jumped on by the goalie, who was permitted to stand on the pool deck Games were often nothing more than gang fights in the water as players ignored the ball, preferring underwater wrestling matches that usually ended with one man floating to the surface unconscious Water polo was first played in the USA in 1888 The game featured the old rugby style of play which resembled American football in the water "American style" water polo became very shows that we are all more likely to be burgled now than 20 years ago and the police advise everyone to take a few simple precautions to protect their homes The first fact is that burglars and other intruders prefer easy opportunities, like a house which is very obviously empty This is much less of a challenge than an occupied house, and one which is wellprotected A burglar will wonder if it is worth the bother There are some general tips on how to avoid your home becoming another crime statistic Avoid leaving signs that your house is empty When you have to go out, leave at least one light on as well as a radio or television, and not leave any curtains wide open The sight of your latest music centre or computer is enough to tempt any burglar Never leave a spare key in a convenient hiding place The first place a burglar will look is under the doormat or in a flower pot and even somewhere more 'imaginative' could soon be uncovered by the intruder It is much safer to leave a key with a neighbour you can trust But if your house is in a quiet, desolate area be aware that this will be a burglar's dream, so deter any potential criminal from approaching your house by fitting security lights to the outside of your house But what could happen if, in spite of the aforementioned precautions, a burglar or intruder has decided to target your home Windows are usually the first point of entry for many intruders Downstairs windows provide easy access while upstairs windows can be reached with a ladder or by climbing up the drainpipe Before going to bed you should double-check that all windows and shutters are locked No matter how small your windows may be, it is surprising what a narrow gap a determined burglar can manage to get through For extra security, fit window locks to the inside of the window What about entry via doors? Your back door and patio doors, which are easily forced open, should have top quality security locks fitted Even though this is expensive it will be money well spent Install a burglar alarm if you can afford it as another line of defence against intruders A sobering fact is that not all intruders have to break and enter into a property Why go to the trouble of breaking in if you can just knock and be invited in? Beware of bogus officials or workmen and, particularly if you are elderly, fit a chain and an eye hole so you can scrutinise callers at your leisure When you have callers never let anybody into your home unless you are absolutely sure they are genuine Ask to see an identity card, for example If you are in the frightening position of waking in the middle of the night and think you can hear an intruder, then on no account should you approach the intruder It is far better to telephone the police and wait for help Question 45 A well-protected house _ A is less likely to be burgled B is regarded as a challenge by most criminals C is a lot of bother to maintain D is very unlikely to be burgled Question 46 According to the writer, we should A avoid leaving our house empty B only go out when we have to C always keep the curtains closed D give the impression that our house is occupied when we go out Question 47 The writer thinks that hiding a key under a doormat or flower pot A is predictable B is useful C is imaginative D is where you always find a spare key Question 48 What word best replaces “desolate” in paragraph 4?
